What to Do and Where to Eat!

There are so many great adventures to be had in Hatteras with your friends and family! Below we have listed some of our favorites along with "insider" tips.

# 1: Spend A Day At Ocean Air
With so many activities to entertain the entire family, you really should plan on hanging out for a while. Start the morning by sending mom to a SUP Yoga class while you and the kids go for a SUP or kayak tour and a swim. Let everyone show off their newly acquired skills to mom and then have lunch next door at the Open Water Grill. Walk across the street and take a siesta on the beach while the wind picks up enough for dad and the big kids to take a windsurfing lesson. Grandma and grandpa, mom, and the toddlers can watch your epic success on the water aboard a skippered Hobie Cat sailboat. Grab some refreshments or dinner from the Open Water Grill again and enjoy beautiful sunset views over the Pamlico Sound.

# 2: Beach It

Pack your car with toys and your cooler with drinks. Head over to any beach and settle in. Bring the surfboards, paddleboards, windsurfer, kiteboard, fishing rods, beach chairs, cooler, and frisbee. Really any beach will do, but we like the south-side of the island (around the cape in Buxton/Frisco) where the Gulf Stream comes in closer to shore and you get tropical conditions with warmer and bluer waters.

# 3: Day Trip To Ocracoke
Wake up early and try to catch the ferry by 9am (You should try to get in line by 8am, but be sure to leave time to grab some breakfast at the Orange Blossom on your way down). After your free boat ride, enjoy one of the world's top ten beaches for a few hours and soak in the sun and tropical water. Head to town for a late lunch and a bike ride. Bikes are cheap to rent and we highly recommend it. Peddle over to the Ocracoke lighthouse, then down the back road for a little shopping and a craft beer on the porch at Zillies. Order up some dinner from Thai Moon and catch the sunset at the south end of the island. Be sure to take a nap on the ferry ride home so you will be well-rested for another day of vacation tomorrow!

# 4: Go For A Hike
You would never know it, but there is actually a really cool old growth Maritime Forest on Hatteras Island. Drive to the Cape Hatteras National Park (look for the lighthouse...) and try either the "Self-Guided Loop," a 3/4 mile trail just on your right as you pass the lighthouse visitor's center parking lot, or try the "Open Ponds Trail," which is just a little further down...look for signs for the "British Cemetery" that marks the trailhead of this 4 mile trail to Frisco. If you really want to get lost in the woods, visit the Buxton Coastal Reserve (on your left just past the high school).

And For Food?

For lunch we recommend the following places:

Burger Burger (at the first stoplight in Avon)
Connor's Supermarket (past the lighthouse in Buxton)

And for dinner, these are some of our favorites. Just make sure you don't get distracted by the sunset for too long, because many of these places stop serving at 9pm.

Oceana's Bistro
(in North Avon)
The Mad Crabber
(Just behind the Subway before the first stoplight in Avon)
Pangea Tavern
(In front of the Avon Fishing Pier)
Captain Rolo's
(In Frisco, right next to the Frisco Woods Campground)
