2nd & 3rd Turnout:
Rider Level: ideal for beginners
Details: Best winds: SW, N, NW. Located a few miles north of Ocean Air, 4WD is required to drive in, but you can park on the side of HWY 12 and walk right to the sound. These are great, low-key launches to beat the crowds, and they are ideal for beginners inclined to head downwind.

Isabelle's Inlet (AKA the Washout or Hatteras Turnout
Water Conditions: sound and ocean access
Details: This great wave spot was renamed for the hurricane that made Hatteras Village its own island. NE and W clearing breezes are side-off, SW is side-on, and WSW is due sideshore - just watch out for the strong current! On the soundside, the shallow bay is protected by shoals that keep the water flat for freestyle windsurfing or soundside kiting.
Directions From WH: Drive South through Buxton and Frisco heading towards Hatteras Village. Pass the Frisco Pier and then the Bath Houses (both on your left). The parking lot is on the soundside just a short ways down, and a dune walkover makes it hard to miss.

The Haulover (AKA Canadian Hole):
Details: For windsurfing only. Located south of Avon and just North of the town of Buxton on HWY 12, this site has great parking and beach access with bathrooms and showers. Deeper water, a good spot for when the wind is side-off (NE), works well on all wind directions. The “hole” provides a deep spot for larger fins or for working safely on manuevers. This is also the easiest access for wave sailing; just walk over the ocean-side dune to Ego Beach, the best known wave sailing spot on Hatteras Island.
Directions From WH: south of Avon and just North of the town of Buxton on HWY 12

Kite Point:
Details: (not for windsurfing) Located 300 meters south of Canadian Hole. Just north of the town of Buxton on HWY 12, this site is best in NE winds (butter-smooth water in the pool), and very good in NW (ride downwind to the Buxton Slick). SW winds are ride-able, but gusty (start a down-winder at KP and finish at 1st Turnout). Head out to KP for easy kite access in the sound. Be careful to stay well away from the power lines

1st Turnout:
Details: The first sound-side access north of Ocean Air is a great spot for kiteboarding on SW winds. Also works well for N and NW winds. Nice open beach and shallow water. This is a good spot for starting, or ending down-winders. It’s also a much safer launch than Island Creek due to cleaner winds and more space.

Ramp 34:
Details: Located 1 mile north of Avon. This is the most popular spot for launching an ocean side down-winder; on NE winds, it’s the stuff dreams are made of. Start here and go all the way to the Lighthouse if you want, but be sure to arrange a ride. Slice and dice wave after wave on this epic down-winder. Watch out for fisherman, surfers, and the Avon Pier.
Directions From WH: Located 1 mile north of Avon.
