The North Ego is the perfect sail for onshore wave riding, maximum durability, total control, and the new twin-fin revolution. The North Sails Design Team focused on producing a sail that provides stability and power for clew first sailing that can still be "turned off" during turns and manuevers. The Ego sports a ton of innovative features, such as a clew cutout; kevlar reinforcement in the tack fitting; a new x-ply luff panel; cross-battens; a new draft placement to facilitate clew first sailing; and a reduced luff length to minimize the swing weight while maximizing the usable power. The clew cutout and diagonal batten placement are derived from modern racing sails and provide an extremely "locked in" feeling that is normally missing from wave-oriented sails. The shakeyness associated with wave sails in gusty winds, tight bottom turns, and top turns - whether it's the top turn of a mast-high wave or the kneeslapper of your local sandbar - those negative sensations are a thing of the past. The draft is further back than most of today's sails, increasing a rider's versatility when sailing with an open clew. As to construction, North has used it's beefiest x-ply in all sizes up to 5.3 while upping it's quality build reputation. It's the most bombproof sail ever produced.
Important: the EGO is the first sail exclusively designed for RDM masts due to its special characteristics (very elastic). The smaller mast diameter perfectly matches the softer sail and shorter luff.

My first impressions of the new EGO were definitely mixed when I laid it on top of my 2008 Voodoo 4.7. I didn't know how good the range would be with such a short luff and the weird angle of the battens. The draft also seemed really far back, especially compared to my voodoo and ice which featured a relatively "draft forward" profile. But man have I FALLEN IN LOVE WITH MY EGO! The sail is insane. It pumps great onto a plane, rotates super-easy with the new batten configuration, and the draft never misbehaves. The construction is unparralled, and there is kevlar stretch control in many of the critical areas. On the wave the sail is phenomenal. I seem to be able to put myself right in the critical section of the wave and feather the back hand with precision control like never before. My bottom turns are more radical and my top turns surfier than ever. The traditional "jerky" sensation I used to feel when smacking the lip and unloading the sail is gone.
For flatwater the sail is well behaved and provides plenty of managable power for those gusty hatteras days when the wind is blowing 18-30. Great range - I'm going 5.6, 4.7, and 3.7 again this year with no gaps!!!
Top tips: seems to be working best with the correct sized mast (which might seem really small), min-med downhaul, and lots of outhaul. Goes great upwind with this setting and the softer mast takes care of the gusts with ease. Getting used to the draft takes only a minute.
