Ocean Air Academy, part of Ocean Air, the premier windsurfing shop on the East Coast, provides the best in windsurfing education, using the latest equipment for every skill level.
Ocean Air Academy teaches an integrated series of Windsurfing Lessons to take the student from the first day "just to try once", to an accomplished high wind shortboard addict or whatever level you prefer. A series of lessons, with practice time in between, can shorten the learning process by years! If you just want to take one lesson, then come to us and have fun and success on the first day. If you really want to learn to Windsurf, come to use because this is the only place on the Outer Banks that offers a Beginner's Program followed by a progressive planned series of lessons to teach you this fabulous sport with maximum fun, and minimum pain, strain, and frustration.
From lessons for those who have never tried windsurfing, to expert level planing jibes, our U.S. Sailing Certified Instructors will guide you to more fun in less time. Most reasonably fit people can learn to windsurf. With correct windsurfing skills and techniques, and modern equipment, brute strength is no longer a requirement!

Short Board Jibe |
Beginner Group Lessons (Maximum 4 Students/Instructor):
Three Day Beginner Program (6hrs $177) After six hours instruction over three days (with a simulator and on the water) you will be able to sail independently on a long board (with centerboard). You will confidently up-haul, sail away, turn-around, tack, and sail upwind. This integrated windsurfing program teaches safety, efficiency, and correct windsurfing techniques. In addition you will be taught how to correctly rig a sail and a board which is valuable when the time comes to select, purchase, or rent gear from a windsurfing shop. All equipment included, EXCEPT WATER SHOES, which can be purchased inexpensively at Ocean Air.
Single Beginner Lesson (2hrs $59) Would you like to give it a try? No commitment is required. Come along and have some FUN. Although we recommend the Three Day Program, you may take Day-1 and decide later if you wish more lessons.
Kids Lesson (1hr One Kid $35, or two Kids together $55) on a simulator and special, friendly board and Kid's Sails. This is an introductory lesson, one time only per year, two kids per instructor. Kids 8 to 15 years old and 60 lbs. minimum.
Advanced Kid's Lessons, private (1 hr. $49 single kid, two kids together $70) if instructor agrees. Teens (13-15) may take kids or adult classes at parent's discretion. Consult instructor to help make the decision. All equipment is included, EXCEPT WATER SHOES.
One on One Performance Lessons:
Individualized instruction (1.5 hrs $89) Are you stuck somewhere in your windsurfing career? You are lessons away from a drastic improvement.

Free Clinics
In April, May, and October, Ocean Air Academy's weekly program includes free clinics. The Shortboard Jibe clinic is on Tuesday, the Rigging clinic is on Wednesday, and the new Open Forum clinic is on Thursday. Come and join the fun! All clinics begin on time at 9:30 AM at Ocean Air, and last for 30 minutes. Bring your coffee and learn something NEW!
Scheduling Your Windsurfing Lesson:
Beginner Program (Adult Lessons)- call or visit Ocean Air (252) 995-5000 to sign up for lessons. We must have your local phone number, or call Brendt (252) 305-0980 between 8:00 and 8:30 a.m. on the day of your lesson Wind and weather can change the lesson schedule. Note: Cell Phones frequently have poor reception on Hatteras Island.
One on One Lessons including Kid's Lessons- Call or visit Ocean Air and leave your name, desired lesson, and local phone number. Brendt will contact you and schedule a time. Or you may contact Brendt directly before 8:30 a.m. and after 6 p.m. at (252) 305-0980. Lessons are usually scheduled at 10:00, 11:15, 1;30 and 2:45 April through September.
